Before your first ride
San Diego Scooter Riding Rules and Safety
We'll help you get comfortable with your scooter before you leave. These stand-up electric scooters have two wheels and handlebars, and there are a few rider and road rules to know before booking.
Bring your license or permit
The person booking must be 18 or older. Scooter riders must be at least 16 and carry a valid driver's license or instruction permit. For riders ages 16-17, arrange parental consent and supervision before booking.
You do not need a motorcycle license for this type of scooter. An ordinary state ID alone does not replace the required driver's license or permit. Wear the supplied helmet for your rental.
Give yourself room on the road
Keep scooter speed at or below 15 mph and obey any lower limit. Do not ride on sidewalks except where needed to enter or leave adjacent property. Use a permitted route appropriate for this device.
Road access depends on the posted speed limit and the type of bike lane. A map's bicycle directions are not proof of scooter permission. Do not carry passengers or ride after alcohol or drugs.
Know where to get off and walk
Electric scooters and Onewheels cannot be ridden on Ocean Front Walk in Mission Beach and Pacific Beach, the designated Mission Bay walkways, or the La Jolla Shores boardwalk. This applies to rented and privately owned devices.
Coronado and Port-managed areas have additional restrictions. Old Town State Historic Park prohibits scooters inside its boundary. Dismount in restricted pedestrian areas and follow the rules at each entrance.
Ask us about Onewheel requirements
A Onewheel is an electric board with one wheel, so its rider rules differ from a scooter's. Local restrictions on motorized devices can still apply. Ask us about eligibility and the available model before reserving.
Keep the board out of water and off beach sand. Follow the instructor's guidance and all device warnings. Do not use a top-speed claim as a riding target.
Go over the equipment with us
We'll help with helmet fit and show you how to start, brake, stop, and check the battery. Tell us about any damage or control problem before riding. Keep the charger dry and use it as instructed.
Call us if something feels wrong
Stop somewhere safe and call the number on your confirmation. Leave damaged equipment stopped and let us handle repairs. In an emergency, call 911 first.
